Gabourey Sidibe konnte in nur kürzester Zeit einen immensen Erfolg erlangen. Sie erhielt ihre allererste Filmrolle für das Erfolgsdrama “Precious – Das Leben ist kostbar” und wurde für ihre Darbietung direkt für einen Oscar nominiert. In dem Film spielt Sidibe ein übergewichtiges Mädchen, das in schwierigen Verhältnissen aufwächst und versucht, aus ihrem Leben auszubrechen.
Die Schauspielerin erzählte, dass sie sich mit der Rolle identifizieren konnte, sie selbst war ihr Leben lang übergewichtig. Auch wenn sie offen zu ihren Pfunden stand, beschloss sie, nach einer Diabetes-Diagnose ihr Leben zu ändern. Durch eine Magen-OP, Ernährungsumstellungen und mehr Bewegung schaffte es Sidibe, knapp 70 Kilo abzunehmen und ein gesünderes Leben zu führen.
