Interpreting the "Language of Love" for a Stronger Bond With Your Kid

January 14, 2022

Not everyone exhibits love the same way. However, this does not mean one does not want love, neither that the other seeks it too much. It is just everyone uses different languages to express love.

A book called The Five Love Languages, published in 1992, aimed to unravel communication between couples. According to experts, this same situation can be replicated when communicating with children.

Children learn the language of love from their primary caregiver, and once they hit the mark of four or five years old, they will start exhibiting a clear preference for one of the forms of communication. The five languages of love are the following:

 1. The Exchange of Gifts

Your child may exhibit their love by offering tokens of love.

 2. The Offering of Service

Your child may offer to do small tasks for you. They may be quick to offer you a glass of water when you are thirsty.

 3. The Verbal Acknowledgment

One of your children may be forthcoming with the deepest appreciation for you for your vital role in their lives.

 4. The Touch of Love

Your child may be eager to hug you and kiss you as soon as they see you nearby.

 5. Spending Quality Time

Your child may demand your undivided attention, asking for storytime or a one-on-one tea party.

Each of your children may employ a different language to tell you they love you. In return, they want you to communicate your love in a language they can understand and perceive.

You must endeavor to understand the emotional cues your child gives and reciprocate their love in kind. Observe if your kid wants your physical presence or presents. Your child would always have a specific inclination towards a love language.

If you are still unsure about how your kid would like to be pampered, ask them what they would like to do with you on a day together.

Some parents may believe their children to be very stoic and untouched by emotions, especially once the kid hits the mark of teenage, they would be quite emphatic in insisting they do not want a hug, especially in public.

This does not mean your child has grown distant from you. It may only mean they have adopted another language of expressing love and would be happy if you catch the cues and reward them with a smile in return to show you have understood their gesture.
